What to Expect During Your Auto Glass Appointment
What should you expect during an auto glass appointment? The process depends on whether you need windshield replacement, chip repair, side or back glass replacement, and whether your vehicle requires ADAS calibration.
This guide explains how to prepare for your auto glass appointment, how long service typically takes, and what to expect from mobile and in-shop auto glass service.
Modern windshields often include Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that use cameras and sensors to support safety features such as lane-keep assist, forward-collision warnings, and automatic emergency braking. When a windshield is replaced, these systems may require calibration to ensure they continue to operate properly.
How Long Does an Auto Glass Appointment Take?
The amount of time needed for an auto glass appointment depends on the type of service and whether ADAS calibration is required.
Standard windshield replacement: Approximately 60–90 minutes
Windshield replacement with ADAS calibration: Approximately 1.5–2.5 hours on average
Some vehicles: Additional time may be required depending on the calibration procedure and other vehicle-specific requirements
Service time can also be affected by weather, road conditions, adhesive curing requirements, and the type of glass being installed.
How Should I Prepare for an Auto Glass Appointment?
Preparing your vehicle before the technician begins can help prevent delays and provide safe, clear access to the areas that need service.
What Should I Remove From My Vehicle?
For windshield service, clear personal belongings, clutter, and accessories from the front seats and dashboard.
Our technician needs clear access to the windshield, dashboard, and any camera or sensor brackets located around the glass.
How Should I Prepare for Side or Back Glass Replacement?
If you're having a side or back window replaced, clear the affected seats, floors, and cargo area.
Side and back windows are typically made from tempered glass, which can shatter into many small pieces. We will vacuum the accessible areas, but some glass may remain in tight spaces such as vents or other areas that our shop vacuums cannot reach.
In some cases, we may recommend professional detailing to remove remaining glass from difficult-to-reach areas.
Does My Vehicle Need to Have Enough Fuel?
It may.
Some vehicle manufacturers require the fuel tank to be approximately ¾ full or full when an ADAS calibration is performed. Fuel level can affect the vehicle's weight and balance, which may be part of the calibration requirements.
If your windshield replacement requires calibration, checking your fuel level before your appointment can help prevent unnecessary delays.
What Should I Do if My Vehicle Has Snow or Ice?
Before a mobile appointment, completely remove snow and ice from the vehicle, work area, and path around the vehicle.
Snow and ice can melt during service and introduce moisture into the work area. Because windshield adhesive requires appropriate temperature and moisture conditions to create a proper bond, mobile service may need to be postponed if the vehicle or work area cannot be adequately prepared.
What Should I Expect From Mobile Auto Glass Service?

Mobile auto glass service allows our technician to perform eligible services at your home, workplace, or another suitable location.
Mobile appointments are scheduled within one of three service windows:
Morning: 8:00 AM–12:00 PM
Afternoon: 12:00 PM–5:00 PM
All Day: 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
Does Mobile Auto Glass Service Depend on the Weather?
Yes. Mobile auto glass service is weather-permitting.
Windshield adhesives are sensitive to temperature and moisture. Rain, snow, or other unsuitable conditions can prevent us from creating the clean and controlled environment required for a proper installation.
If weather conditions prevent safe service, the appointment may need to be rescheduled.
If you want to avoid potential weather delays, in-shop service may be the better option.
What Are the Requirements for Mobile Auto Glass Service?
Your vehicle and service location need to meet several requirements before our technician arrives.
Off-street parking:The vehicle must be parked in a driveway or private lot. We cannot safely perform mobile service on a vehicle parked along a busy street.
Room to move around the vehicle:The technician needs enough space to fully open both front doors and walk around the vehicle.
Access for the mobile van:Our van serves as the technician's mobile workshop and power source. It needs to be able to park alongside, in front of, or behind the vehicle.
Level, paved ground:The vehicle must be parked on flat, paved ground. Gravel, dirt, grass, and paver stones may not provide a suitable surface for service or ADAS calibration.
How Much Space Is Needed for ADAS Calibration?
Some vehicles require significant open space in front of the vehicle during ADAS calibration.
Depending on the vehicle and calibration procedure, up to approximately 30 feet of open space may be required.
If you're unsure whether your driveway or service location provides enough room, let us know before your appointment so we can discuss your options.
Will My Vehicle Need to Be Driven for ADAS Calibration?
Possibly.
Some ADAS calibration procedures require the vehicle to be driven on public roads so the vehicle's cameras can recognize real-world road markings and driving conditions.
Depending on the vehicle, the technician may need to drive at approximately 35–60 mph during the calibration process.
Conditions such as bright sunlight, faded lane markings, uneven roads, traffic, or other environmental factors can interfere with calibration.
If suitable driving conditions cannot be found or calibration cannot be completed during the mobile appointment, the vehicle may need to be brought to our shop to finish the process.
What Should I Expect From In-Shop Auto Glass Service?

In-shop auto glass service provides a controlled environment for your installation and eliminates many of the weather and workspace limitations associated with mobile service.
For vehicles requiring ADAS calibration, in-shop service may also provide a more suitable environment for completing the calibration process.
How Long Will My In-Shop Appointment Take?
Plan for approximately:
Standard windshield replacement: 60–90 minutes
Windshield replacement with ADAS calibration: 1.5–2.5 hours on average
Some vehicles: Additional time may be required
The exact service time depends on your vehicle, the type of glass being installed, adhesive curing requirements, and whether calibration is necessary.
Why Does a Windshield Need Time to Cure?
Windshield adhesive needs time to cure properly before the vehicle can be safely driven.
The required curing time depends on the adhesive and installation requirements. Our technicians will let you know when your vehicle is ready to leave the shop.
What Happens if I Arrive Late for My Appointment?
In-shop appointments are scheduled for specific times so we can keep our service schedule running smoothly.
Please arrive on time and allow enough time to check in.
Arriving more than 15 minutes late may require your appointment to be rescheduled.
What Should I Expect During a Windshield Chip Repair?
A windshield chip repair is intended to restore structural strength and help prevent the damage from spreading. It is not primarily a cosmetic repair.
The technician injects specialized resin into the damaged area to stabilize the glass.
Will a Windshield Chip Still Be Visible After Repair?
Yes.
A repaired chip may remain visible after the repair. This is normal and does not necessarily mean the repair was unsuccessful.
The purpose of the repair is to restore strength and help prevent the damage from spreading—not to make the original damage completely disappear.
Can a Windshield Chip Spread During Repair?
Yes. There is a small possibility that an existing chip can spread while resin is being injected.
The damage was already present before the repair began, and chip repair is an attempt to salvage the existing windshield rather than a guarantee that the glass can be repaired.
If the chip spreads during the repair process, the windshield will require replacement.
A second repair attempt cannot be performed on the same damaged area.
Mobile vs. In-Shop Auto Glass Service: Which Is Right for You?
Both mobile and in-shop service can be convenient. The best option depends on your location, the weather, your vehicle, and whether ADAS calibration is required.
Mobile Auto Glass Service | In-Shop Auto Glass Service |
Technician comes to your location | You bring your vehicle to the shop |
Convenient for home or work | Controlled service environment |
Weather permitting | Not affected by outdoor weather |
Requires suitable parking and workspace | Shop provides the required work area |
Some calibrations may require a road test | Suitable environment for calibration |
Convenient when location requirements are met | Good option when mobile conditions aren't suitable |
If your mobile location does not meet the requirements—or if weather or road conditions could interfere with service—in-shop service may be the better choice.
